Practical preparation in a care setting

Our preparation program uses Abloom's residence for supervised learning and skills practice relevant to each staff member's role. The focus includes respectful daily assistance, communication, documentation and knowing when to ask for help.

Before an assignment, we review the tasks involved and the skills required. Each person's home, equipment and preferences also need attention; experience in one setting does not replace preparation for another.

Does preparation in the residence mean every caregiver can perform nursing tasks?

No. Staff preparation is matched to the person's role. Nursing responsibilities and any delegated tasks require the appropriate qualifications, clinical direction and preparation for the client's specific care. We explain who is assigned to each agreed task.

A care plan people can use

We discuss what support is needed, how the person prefers to receive it and which tasks Abloom has agreed to provide. The plan identifies responsibilities so that clients, caregivers and the appropriate care professionals share one understanding.

Attention to a person's usual routine

Getting to know someone includes learning what is usual for them. When staff notice a relevant change during care, they follow the reporting arrangements for that person. Clinical questions are reviewed by the appropriate professional.

Communication with a clear next step

At the start of service we explain who handles care questions, how to raise concerns and how authorized family members will receive updates. When support needs change, we discuss what needs to be reviewed.
